Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden

We are very lucky to be part of this great initiative which aims to introduce pleasurable food education to our year 4 and 5 children. The program emphasises the flavours as well as the health benefits of fresh, seasonal food.

Dishes cooked reflect the vegetables, herbs and fruits grown, season-by-season, by the children in our organic garden. The program also offers many links to our literacy, numeracy, science, cultural studies and environmental sustainability studies. Plus observable social benefits for all of our students.

Each week our students are actively involved in cooking or gardening sessions. The cooking group along with adult volunteers create a main dish and salad, generally using ingredients from our garden. At the end of each session all the children share the meal and they are very proud of the great dishes they have produced.

The gardening group learn valuable skills such as propagating plants, harvesting, learning about herbs and edible plants.

So far the culinary skills, of the children, have improved dramatically as has their plant and gardening knowledge. Last year our Stephanie Alexander students catered for our Year Six Graduation dinner. The feast they provided was delicious!

We are always looking for volunteers to help support our program and welcome anyone to come along and assist us. The program runs between 9 am and 1.30pm every Tuesday.
